Course Name : Computer Simulation & modeling

TITLE OF EXPERIMENT/EXERCISE: Lab Activity on a Simple Model of a Reprocessing model using Decide Module.

Goal AIM/OBJECTIVE (similar to the manual):

Learning Objectives

To Understand the basic components of the Arena Environment.

Description :

In this session we will cover:

1. The Arena simulation software environment.

2. Simulation project concepts such as Entities, Resources, Queues, Attributes, Variables, and Statistical accumulators in Arena.

3.Flowchart and data modules in Arena

4. The Create, Process, Decide and Dispose modules in Arena.

5. Building and running a simple simulation model discuss the results of a simulation run.

In this lab the following aspects are going to be introduced:

• How to create entities in Arena (using the “Create” module from the Basic Process panel).

• One of the ways of transferring entities in Arena (Connect).

• How to animate (by means of plots) different characteristics of queues and resources (animation toolbar can be used for this purpose).

• A way of calculating flow times or time in system for entities.

• How to get rid of entities using the “Dispose” module.

• How to define the number of replications and the length of the simulation runs.

• How the time is handled in Arena (It is necessary to be consistent with the time units)

• The tasks in this Lab show how different the results can be when running different replications. This is a consequence of using stochastic (random) input data

Theory / Explanation:

DECIDE Module

This module allows for decision-making processes in the system. It includes options to make decisions based on one or more conditions

(e.g., if entity type is Gold Card) or based on one or more probabilities (e.g., 75% true; 25% false). Conditions can be based on attribute values (e.g., Priority), variable values (e.g., Number Denied), the entity type, or an expression (e.g., NQ (ProcessA.Queue).

Procedure: Consider the Following Reprocessing Model system.

A manufacturing plant has the products arriving at a constant rate of 8 per minute and are processed in machine 1 with processing time exponentially distributed with 10 minutes, at the end of a process a quality inspection is carried out and found that 15% of the needs to be reprocessed in machine 1 with a reprocessing time exponentially distribution of 2 minutes. Simulate the model with 149 entities.

Main Body of Assignment

1. The first task is to draw a flow chart for the above system.(Logical Diagram of Reprocessing System)

A Clear explanation of how the model is built should be provided; this section should mainly refer to the modules that are used and their exact place in the flow chart. All the entities and attributes used in the model should be explained here.

2. Take a screen shot or snapshot of changing entities pictures and adding Resource pictures. Build and configure model as explained in the above section.

Sever utilization – It is estimated by dividing the amount of time that the server is busy during a simulation by the amount of time covered by the simulation
